My grandfather painted The Nut in Tasmania in the 1930s. That painting, along with many others, was lost in a house fire and I never saw it. For much of my life, I was unaware of the artistic lineage shared between my grandfather, great grandfather and myself. That absence of images, knowledge, and connection has remained present.
In 2024, I travelled to Tasmania and visited places my ancestors would have known. The journey became a way of standing within the same landscapes and allowing time and memory to surface.
At the summit of Kunanyi / Mt Wellington, the rock formations felt ancient and insistent, carrying layered geological and cultural histories. On the brink of snowfall, I wanted to remain in the silence of the rocks.
Hobart from (Kunanyi) Mt Wellington. 1952–2024 brings together ancestral movement through the landscape, the volcanic formations , mid-century tourism and my own encounter. Vintage postcards from 1952 introduce a tourist's gaze alongside the permanence of the rocks. The top layers of paint carries the ancient rock formations and patterns referencing the beginnings of ice and snow... a fleeting trace of my presence.
The work allows multiple histories to coexist without hierarchy.
