This painting, with blues and sepia tones, transports me back to my first watercolor I did in country Australia, during the late 70s, where I explored light and shade. The marks evoke a sense of ancient history, feeling as though they've existed for centuries. It was only later that I recognized the profound connection to Australian landscapes and tribal art, and the echoes of the ancient frescoes I'd admired in Spain, Italy, and Venice.
Artwork links to the soak-stain technique of American artist Helen Frankenthaler (1928–2011) It’s a pure abstraction painting, which means, it’s about the paint, colour, line, form. I also, wanted to see if the paint laid on the surface of the canvas, or sink into canvas material? Problem solving...I wanted to apply layers of marks that were loose and free and just let go, and not control them. Connections to the Surrealists way of working , automatic making & thinking.
