Artist Residency

Project Can Serrat began during an awarded artist residency at Can Serrat International Art Centre, Barcelona, Spain in 2005, and continues as an ongoing body of work and collaborative framework grounded in my studio practice. The project investigates abstraction through surface, material memory, and the visual language of place — shaped by travel, temporary immersion, and at times, sustained exchange with other artists.

My own work within Project Can Serrat draws from weathered urban environments, architectural fragments, and the quiet traces left through use, time, and decay. Across painting, drawing, and sculpture, the work is driven by accumulative processes in which gesture and restraint give form to surface memory through — layering gesture, mark, to evoke histories embedded in surfaces. The influence of travel to European cities, movement between locations, and working in transit remains integral to the project’s material sensibility.

The project intentionally developed through extended dialogue with artists in Barcelona and Australia and has since evolved into a series of international exhibitions and collaborations across Australia, Europe, and the United States, including presentations in Melbourne, Leipzig, Berlin and New York.

Project Can Serrat remains intentionally open, allowing the work to move between painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, and non-traditional exhibition contexts. I continue to develop the project from my studio in Victoria, Australia, and through ongoing travel, with each iteration extending the conversation between surface, memory, and exchange.
