Painting with Stitch
Abstract Artworks.
Back in the studio, I find myself painting with cloth again.
The rhythm feels familiar. My textile pieces unfold much like my large abstract paintings, guided by the same instincts and quiet decisions — only now the materials have shifted. Cloth and stitch take the place of oil paint and pigment stick. The pace is slower than the swish of a loaded brush or the drag of a rag across canvas, but the process is basically the same. Layering. Responding. Listening.
Antique cloth carries its own memory. Inks bleed and settle differently here. Thread becomes line, mark, and gesture. Each stitch is imperfect holding time in a way paint never quite can.
Nearly four decades into this practice and still drawn to the same questions — moments of change, the beauty of rust and decay, and the quietness of renewal. The environment is always transforming. These works sit in that in-between space, where erosion and growth coexist, where something worn lives again.
The work continues — slowly, intuitively and to what wants to emerge next.
